Patio Installation on Whidbey Island
Good weather on this island is worth using. A well-built patio turns a stretch of struggling lawn into the part of the property your family actually spends time in, and it works far more months of the year than most people expect.
We design and install patios, walkways, and fire pit areas, and we build the base underneath them to island standards.

Custom Patio Design
Size, shape, and placement matter more than material. We look at where the sun actually falls on your property, where the wind comes from, and how you want to move between the house and the space. A beautiful patio in the wrong spot goes unused.
Paver Patio Installation
Interlocking pavers are the strongest choice for island conditions. They flex slightly with ground movement instead of cracking, individual units can be lifted and reset if anything settles, and the range of colors and patterns is enormous.
Concrete and Natural Stone
Poured concrete for a clean modern look at a competitive price, or natural flagstone and cut stone for something with more character. Each has trade-offs in cost, maintenance, and how it handles our freeze cycles, and we will walk you through them honestly.
Fire Pits and Outdoor Features
An outdoor fire pit is what extends patio season on this island from three months to eight. We build them into the patio design as permanent features, along with seating walls, steps, and integrated planters.
Patio Repair and Restoration
Settled, sunken, or moss-covered patios can usually be lifted, re-based, and reset for far less than a replacement. We also handle joint sand replacement and sealing.
The Base Is the Whole Job
Anyone can lay pavers. What separates a patio that stays flat from one that ripples and sinks is the eight inches nobody ever sees.
Island soil holds water. Build a patio on a thin base over saturated ground and the freeze cycles will move it, guaranteed. We excavate to proper depth, install and compact base material in lifts, and build in drainage so water leaves rather than pooling underneath. It is slower and it costs more up front, and it is the reason our patios do not need resetting in year four.
Moss, Weather, and Long-Term Maintenance
Our wet season is generous to moss and algae, particularly on shaded north-facing surfaces. Material choice, joint sand type, and sealing all affect how much of that you deal with, and we factor your site's exposure into what we recommend.
We will also show you what upkeep the finished patio actually needs, which for most installations is modest, and we can handle it for you if you would rather not.
Why Whidbey Island Property Owners Choose Evergreen
We opened in 2004, but our family has been part of this island for generations. That local knowledge is the difference between a landscape that looks good on install day and one that still looks good in year five.
- No year-round contracts. Start when you need us, stop when you don't. All we ask is a two-week notice.
- Woman-owned and operated for over 20 years, with the same owner walking properties and writing bids.
- Licensed, bonded, and insured, and members of the Concrete Masonry Hardscape Association.
- Honest estimates. If a project would make your problem worse, we will tell you instead of writing the bid.
Serving Communities Across Whidbey Island
We work the full length of the island and beyond, including Oak Harbor, Coupeville, Freeland, Greenbank, Langley, and Clinton, plus Fidalgo Island and the Skagit Valley.
Conditions change quickly here. A property in Greenbank does not drain like a property near Cornet Bay, and a bluff lot in Coupeville faces salt wind that an inland Oak Harbor yard never sees. We plan around what your specific site is doing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Pavers or concrete for a Whidbey Island patio?
Pavers generally handle our conditions better. They flex with ground movement rather than cracking, and individual units can be lifted and reset if settling occurs. Concrete costs less up front and gives a cleaner modern look, but a crack in concrete is a permanent repair.
How long does a patio installation take?
Most residential patios run several days to a couple of weeks depending on size, access, and how much excavation the site needs. Properties with difficult access or heavy grading take longer.
Why do patios sink or become uneven?
Nearly always an inadequate base. On island soil that holds water, a thin or poorly compacted base will shift with freeze cycles. Proper excavation depth, compaction in lifts, and drainage prevent it.
Can you add a fire pit to an existing patio?
Yes. We can build a fire pit into an existing patio or design one alongside a new installation, including surrounding seating walls.
