Retaining Wall Contractors on Whidbey Island
A retaining wall is the most common fix for the most common island problem: a slope that will not hold and water that will not drain. Built right, it turns unusable ground into flat, planted, usable yard and stops erosion for decades.
Built wrong, it bulges, leans, and fails in about five years. We are members of the Concrete Masonry Hardscape Association specifically so ours do not.

Custom Wall Design
We start with what the site is doing. How much soil the wall has to hold, where water is moving, what the grade needs to become, and what you want the finished space to do. Then we choose material and construction method to match, rather than the other way around.
Professional Installation
Proper base preparation, compacted in lifts. Clean drainage rock behind the wall. Drain pipe daylighted to somewhere useful. Geogrid reinforcement where the height and load call for it. None of this is visible in the finished wall, and all of it is why the wall is still straight in fifteen years.
Wall Repair and Replacement
We repair leaning, bulging, and failing walls, including plenty that were built without drainage behind them. We will assess honestly whether a repair will hold or whether you are better served rebuilding, and we will tell you which one we would do on our own property.
Why Drainage Is Everything on Whidbey Island
Island soil is glacial till sitting on a dense hardpan layer that water does not pass through. When winter rain saturates the soil behind a wall and cannot escape, it creates hydrostatic pressure, and that pressure is what pushes walls over. It is not the weight of the soil that fails most walls out here. It is the water in it.
That is why every wall we build gets a full drainage assembly behind it. Clean rock, filter fabric to keep fines from clogging it, and a drain line with somewhere to actually go. A wall without that system on this island is a wall with a deadline.
Materials We Build With
- Segmental block. Engineered, consistent, and cost-effective, with a wide range of colors and textures. The workhorse choice for most residential walls.
- Natural stone. Distinctive and beautiful, especially on rural and waterfront lots where a manufactured look would feel wrong.
- Boulder and rockery walls. Well suited to larger island slopes and a natural fit with the surrounding landscape.
Height, Engineering, and Permits
Taller walls carry more load and are subject to more requirements. Depending on height, slope, and what sits above or below the wall, your project may need engineered drawings and a permit from the county.
We will tell you during the estimate whether your wall falls into that category and what the process looks like. We would rather have that conversation up front than build something that has to come out.
Why Whidbey Island Property Owners Choose Evergreen
We opened in 2004, but our family has been part of this island for generations. That local knowledge is the difference between a landscape that looks good on install day and one that still looks good in year five.
- No year-round contracts. Start when you need us, stop when you don't. All we ask is a two-week notice.
- Woman-owned and operated for over 20 years, with the same owner walking properties and writing bids.
- Licensed, bonded, and insured, and members of the Concrete Masonry Hardscape Association.
- Honest estimates. If a project would make your problem worse, we will tell you instead of writing the bid.
Serving Communities Across Whidbey Island
We work the full length of the island and beyond, including Oak Harbor, Coupeville, Freeland, Greenbank, Langley, and Clinton, plus Fidalgo Island and the Skagit Valley.
Conditions change quickly here. A property in Greenbank does not drain like a property near Cornet Bay, and a bluff lot in Coupeville faces salt wind that an inland Oak Harbor yard never sees. We plan around what your specific site is doing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do retaining walls fail on Whidbey Island?
Almost always drainage. Island soil sits on hardpan that water cannot pass through, so winter rain saturates the soil behind the wall and creates pressure that pushes it out. Walls built without drainage rock and a functioning drain line are the ones that lean.
Does my retaining wall need a permit?
It depends on the height of the wall, the slope, and what the wall is supporting. Taller walls typically require engineering and a county permit. We will tell you which category your project falls into when we do the estimate.
Can you repair an existing wall instead of replacing it?
Sometimes. It depends on how the wall was built and how far it has moved. We will give you an honest assessment, including when a repair would only buy you a couple of years.
What is the difference between block and natural stone walls?
Block is engineered, consistent, and generally more cost-effective. Natural stone costs more and takes longer to build but produces a distinctive look that suits rural and waterfront island properties.
